Is Facebook a Fad? Half of Americans Think So [STUDY]-Don't get cocky, remember MySpace?
A poll conducted by the Associated Press and CNBC found that 46% of respondents think Facebook will fade away as new platforms come along in the future. However, about 43% believe the site will likely be successful for the long haul.
Am I Oversharing? via @Lifehacker - Eh, some days, yes, some days, no
The first survey, conducted by Intel, suggests people's biggest pet peeves about online sharing are:
-Oversharing private information
-Inappropriate information about co-workers
-Explicit photos (which I would of course never do!)
-Complaining
-Profanity
-Mundane details

8 Ways to Drive Traffic to Your Site With Google+ - Some really good tips on using G+
Google is somewhat clumsily calling it “Search, plus Your World.” You see, Google has years of experience in the search engine business. And they are so good because they aim to deliver what people are looking for, not just what they actually enter into the search window. They have to figure out if your search on “porter” is supposed to show a lot of beer websites or websites focusing on people who carry luggage.
How to Monitor Your Facebook Network-A really neat service
Monitoring service Secure.me seeks to help users gain more control over their Facebook information. Computer passwords: Speak, friend, and enter-There are still people who set their password to 12345
Mr Bonneau found some intriguing variations. Older users had better passwords than young ones. (So much for the tech-savviness of youth.) People whose preferred language was Korean or German chose the most secure passwords; those who spoke Indonesian the least. Passwords designed to hide sensitive information such as credit-card numbers were only slightly more secure than those protecting less important things, like access to games. “Nag screens” that told users they had chosen a weak password made virtually no difference. And users whose accounts had been hacked in the past did not make dramatically more secure choices than those who had never been hacked.

Political Postings Risk Social Media Alienation-Check out the last paragraph if you're in cause marketing
As the Republican primary season winds down and focus shifts to the general election, social network users can likely expect more disagreements of this type to pop up, and brand marketers should take note. For now, the majority of social network users are not hitting any unfriend or hide buttons—but if political disagreements become more widespread, friend and influencer networks may begin to shrink, on average, hobbling the power of social word-of-mouth for marketers.

5 Ways TV Newsrooms Use the Facebook Cover Photo-Some uses of the new Timeline feature to think about
In TV news lingo, the cover photo is the lead story. And in the competitive world of journalism, newsrooms are all vying for the best lead. I tell my newsroom clients to think of it as the cold open. You have a short amount of time to get people hooked and wanting more. For news organizations, it’s a special challenge. Facebook is more than a publicity or customer service platform. For them, it’s part of the job. Journalists use social media to gather news content and find sources. And step one is building a large and active fan base.
Here are a few trends we’re seeing as newsrooms use their cover photos to tease viewers into becoming fans. What are some other trends you’re seeing with cover photos on news organizations’ brand Timelines? Which approach do you think works best? Let us know in the comments.

Five Leadership Mistakes Of The Galactic Empire - If you liked the Captain Kirk leadership article
But mistakes are learning opportunities. And in thinking about Star Wars, let’s leave the prequels behind and focus on the original trilogy. It occurs to me that the Star Wars films have a lot to teach us about leadership styles.
In particular, the Galactic Empire strikes me as a quintessential example of how not to effectively run an organization. Let’s take a look at five of the Empire’s biggest mistakes and see how you can avoid them in your own organization.

Flickr Can't Go Back To What It Once Was-And it's a shame
The new Flickr homepage will look more like the slick, image-only homepages of online visual pinboard Pinterest and photo-sharing app Pixable. There will be little white space on the homepage. In the new version, photos will appear four times their current size. They will lie on the page, scattered about like puzzle pieces slipped together without overlap. Flickr is repositioning itself to look more like an app, which is right in line with Yahoo's "mobile first" strategy. But this is a Web-only photo community - and if Instagram is showing us anything, it's that the future of photography is in smartphones.
[STUDY] Facebook Defriending is on the Rise-This means the remaining friends are a more intimate group
If you've been defriending a lot lately, you're not alone.
A new study out from Pew today confirms what we already know: People don't want to collect as many Facebook friends as possible. Social networkers are becoming more selective, managing their accounts and "pruning" people from their lists. More users are untagging themselves from photos, deleting comments and unfriending others. Women and younger users tend to prune more than others: 67% of women with social network site profiles have deleted users compared with 58% of men.

Supercharge your social media strategy by getting back to basics-Including a simple strategy to get back on track
Kenichi Ohmae, known as Mr. Strategy, spent 20 years at McKinsey, the management consulting titan, honing his craft. His most notable achievement was the creation of the 3Cs — a deceptively simple framework for businesses to achieve a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
It so happens that it’s a nifty tool for building a social media strategy too.
The 3Cs are Customer, Company, and Competition. Focusing on what makes you special in each of these areas is the secret sauce.
Social Media Key Influencer in Multi-Exposure Purchase Path-Social Media may not make a sale, but it can make it bigger
The study found that when consumers were exposed to social media in addition to other online ad formats or marketing channels, such as search, email and display, the average revenue per order for US advertisers was $280.71—more than double the order size compared to the average of all digital channels.

How Pinterest Is Becoming the Next Big Thing in Social Media for Business
Perhaps the most powerful business application is the ability to post images of your company's products on your Pinterest board and link them back to your website. It works as a sort of virtual store catalog.
But remember that this is social media. If you simply display images of your products without contributing other content or sharing other users' pins, you'll likely find that people don't pay much attention. After all, no one likes a self-absorbed blowhard.

How Google's New Privacy Policy Could Affect You-You will be assimilated
“Google has always collected information. That hasn’t changed,” Opsahl said. “But information that was once siloed will now be co-mingled.”
Google’s new policy replaces more than 60 existing product-specific privacy documents, for services including Gmail , YouTube and Google Docs. Google says the unified terms will provide better search results and serve up ads that are more likely to be of interest. By combining your history across products, it will have more data to work with.
